Having sex with a new partner

Before having sex with a new partner, consider these issues:

  1. before-having-sexYou. What is your motivation for intercourse- intimacy, relief, revenge, intimidation, pleasure, procreation, what? How will you feel after intercouse...happy, satisfied, guilty, regretful?  Make sure you want to have sex with this person and the kind of sex your partner wants is the same kind that you want- oral sex, sexual intercourse, anal sex, sado masochistic sex, whatever.  Don’t do anything you don’t want to do.
  2. Your Partner. What are your partner's motivation for sex and how do these motivations mesh with you?  Because a basic moral principle is to do no harm to others, consider the effect of sex on your partner. If you suspect that your partner will regret sex with you, don’t let it happen.
  3. Relationship Consequences. Will sex with this partner bring you closer together as a couple or distant you from each other?  Does it matter to you?  Does it matter to your partner?.
  4. Contraception. Who is taking responsibility for avoiding pregnancy?   Between a third to a half of all pregnancies are unintended.
  5. HIV and Other STDs. Engaging in casual sex has potentially fatal consequences. In one study only 37 percent of men with HIV told a casual partner of their positive HIV status.
  6. Alcohol and Other Drugs. An unintended pregnancy is much more likely among partners drinking  alcohol or using other drugs.
